The cells in our intestines that produce satiety are located at the end of the small intestine. These cells are triggered when calories reach them. Most of the calories in diets high in meats and processed foods are absorbed higher-up in our small intestine, i.e., before they reach these cells.
In contrast, minimally processed plant-based foods include most of their calories in cells protected from digestion by the cell wall. Bacteria that live toward the end of our small intestine break down those cell walls releasing the calories within the cells. These calories trigger the cells that release GLP-1 and produce satiety.
Why did we evolve such a strange arrangement? Because our ancestors ate mostly unprocessed plant-based foods.
I had never heard of this before. It’s an amazing explanation for why direct GLP-1 injections help produce satiety. It also explains why weight-loss operations that remove part of the small intestine have a similar effect. This video explains it all.
That was a good video until the very end where he suggested we eat the way nature intended ... as if nature has intent.
